About us

Today’s Festiniog Railway is one of the foremost tourist attractions in Wales, with thousands enjoying a trip through this spectacular part of Snowdonia every year. Some come to experience riding behind its unique steam engines, others to enjoy the stunning views as the train climbs steadily higher, twisting and turning on its journey from Porthmadog to the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. And then there’s the history…

The railway’s story dates back to the 1830s, since when it has played a pioneering role in the technological development of narrow-gauge lines around the world. It is now home to a priceless collection of locomotives, carriages and other artefacts, as well as an extensive written archive.

This site aims to introduce you to key aspects of the Festiniog’s heritage, as well as our continued efforts to both preserve and celebrate it.
