Who fancies a pint of BBT? Rolls off the tongue doesn't it? As well as the Boston Lodge weighbridge, our other major project is the recreation of the monster of all wooden waggons, the Bogie Ballast Truck. This was one of a pair of very large goods waggons built by the railway to haul ballast, although like all other high sided goods stock in practice they would have taken a variety of loads particularly coal. The braked bogie on the top end is similar to that fitted to the Curly Roofed Vans whilst the other bogie is of simpler design. They were both dismantled shortly after the First World War. The Wooden Waggon Federation are asking all those willing to donate £8.80 per month to fund the project. To some people, this may just look like a heap of rusty bits. For the weighbridge team, seeing these pictures was like Christmas coming. The Ffestiniog is known for never throwing anything away, and 50 years after they were extracted out of the ground it is good to see the weighing tables and beams are intact. Though there has not been the chance to examine everything in detail yet, the team is confident most things have survived, including being pleasantly surprised that one of the “cannon ball” balance weights is still in existence (we need two if anyone knows where the other one is). First steps… Today the Boston Lodge Weighbridge team went on a field trip to Talyllyn Railway to look at the restored Tywyn weighbridge. Like ours it is a Pooley weighing machine. Weighing is done by placing suitable weights on the balancing table (bottom left with a 2 hundredweight (cwt) weight on it) then sliding the stones (st) balance (the thing that looks like a cannonball) along the beam, and then it can also be adjusted by moving the bobbin along the top beam to adjust the pounds (lb) measurement. The ratio between the weights on the machine and what is actually being weighed is 1:75.
