First steps… Today the Boston Lodge Weighbridge team went on a field trip to Talyllyn Railway to look at the restored Tywyn weighbridge. Like ours it is a Pooley weighing machine. Weighing is done by placing suitable weights on the balancing table (bottom left with a 2 hundredweight (cwt) weight on it) then sliding the stones (st) balance (the thing that looks like a cannonball) along the beam, and then it can also be adjusted by moving the bobbin along the top beam to adjust the pounds (lb) measurement. The ratio between the weights on the machine and what is actually being weighed is 1:75. The immediate use of this new found knowledge is to help the team locate the bits now they know what they all look like! ... See MoreSee Less

Two collections have been recently added to the FfWHR resource (commonly called iBase). Firstly there is John Browning's collection of photos from 1966 to 1970 including pictures of Alistair, early Alco, coal fired Ladies, the Old Earl, and early Dduallt pictures.Secondly, there is John Gibbons' collection. He was a long term volunteer from the mid 1950s to early 1970s before joining the permanent staff. As a school teacher he brought young volunteers to work with him on the PW. Pictures include early days, the Wickham Trolley, and standard gauge trains bringing ballast. The picture here from the John Gibbons collection shows a working party in the Top Yard at Boston Lodge in 1961 with Robert and Michael Bruce and Andrew Brown. Compare it to this recent picture taken from a similar position during the track relaying towards the end of last year. Members of the Festiniog Railway Heritage Group get access to non-watermarked, higher resolution, pictures on iBase. Join now and peruse an amazing visual collection of the history of the World Famous Ffestiniog Railway. ... See MoreSee Less

As we either wait for the snow to melt or melt ourselves at this time of year, it’s worth putting some padding around the last 2 posts of 2025 about our two new projects. We have over 6000 followers on Facebook & Instagram but less than 500 paid up Group members. Please do consider joining us. Our Journal, published 4 times a year, is stuffed with articles about many different aspects of the history of our railway that you won’t find elsewhere. The last issue launched two big projects – the Boston Lodge Weighbridge, and the Bogie Ballast Truck. So for those of you that are members, I am sorry for repeating what you already know, but for the majority, this post and next will give an overview of the projects. The Festiniog Railway was built for, and gained revenue from, slate and other goods. Passengers came later. The price of goods cartage is generally calculated on weight. The FR started in 1836 with a weighbridge at Portmadoc, but as the wharves became congested, it was moved to Boston Lodge in 1857, and then Minffordd in 1872 when the exchange sidings with the Cambrian Railways opened. The equipment at Minffordd was removed in 1976 and was stored (we don’t throw anything away). This brief history misses many details but research is still being carried out in the Company records as some details remain uncertain (such as was the equipment moved each time or new). The railway at Minffordd is still in daily operational use, but the location of the weighbridge at Boston Lodge was on the old route alignment which, until recently, was part of one of the roadways into the Works. Following a comment along the lines of “wouldn’t it be nice to…” by our General Manager, Paul Lewin, on a post on Facebook highlighting the 1976 removal, the Heritage Group committee assessed and then agreed to lead the project to reinstall the weighbridge equipment and a length of demonstration line on the old route, at Boston Lodge. This will then become part of our highly successful tours, and complete the demonstration of the heritage of the Boston Lodge Works site. If you would like to get involved please contact us, or donate through the website sales page. ... See MoreSee Less
