News To do

NEW RELEASE - 14 February 2008

FestWiki Version 1.3.6 is now live. This adds some new special pages, supports the full range of MediaWiki skins, has new parser functions #iferror and #special and stops frameless images being displayed larger than their default size. Atom and RSS feeds are now available for Special:Recentchangeslinked in addition to page histories and Special:Recentchanges. This release also fixes a number of defects including:

  • items in the watchlist are now correctly bolded on Special:Recentchanges
  • searching now works correctly for all namespaces
  • editing a section of a page now redirects to the correct section when the edit is saved
  • a number of issues with formatting <ref> tags have been fixed

Note that the Classic, Cologne Blue and Nostalgia skins are provided for completeness. These are old MediaWiki skins and are not as functional as the newer skins.

Users of MediaWiki/Wikipedia will find that FestWiki is almost identical, although there are a lot of detailed differences between the two. The most significant differences between FestWiki and MediaWiki are:

  • FestWiki does not support heiroglyphics, mathematical formulae or timelines
  • FestWiki only accepts images as uploads, not other types of media

New processes for deleting pages have been introduced. Templates to support the processes have been provided.

A style guide has been created. This is based on the Wikipedia Manual of Style. It should not be regarded as prescriptive but editors are encouraged to follow it. Changes should be discussed on its talk page. The Wikipedia Manual of Style includes a number of sub-pages giving more detail on specific subjects and specialised guidance for articles on particular topics. For the moment, our style guide is a single page. Suggestions for modifications and thoughts on the need for additional pages would be welcome.

See this page "Discussion" area for status on items below

  • Insert appropriate image copyright tags for all existing images
  • Add more redirect pages to make it easier for misspelt/miscapitalised links to end up at the right target
  • Move existing pages to new titles where appropriate, particularly where the new software allows the page title to be correctly capitalised
  • Cite references on existing pages
  • Rework the Help pages - they were written by the developer who is, perhaps, a little too close to the software (and has spent too much time reading Wikipedia's help). It would also be good to update the examples, some of which are borrowed from Wikipedia help.
  • Add anything missing to the help pages
  • Produce some lightweight policies and procedures
  • Write a style guide
  • Find someone to look after the community portal!
