Traeth Mawr (meaning "big beach") is more generally the name given to the whole area of the Afon Glaslyn estuary on the inland side of the cob. The seawards side is known as Traeth Bach
In terms of the railway, Traeth Mawr is the name given to the site of the temporary run-around loop and terminus for the Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) Pont Croesor Extension, used for just the season in 2007.
Sometimes known as Portreuddyn, after the nearby Portreuddyn Castle. See O.S. map.
Public trains started to run to here from Friday 23rd March 2007. The last public service to terminate at Traeth Mawr ran on the 28th October 2007. After this date Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) trains will run push-pull to a point just south of Farmyard Farm Crossing.
The loop was due to be removed from the 3rd November 2007 onwards.
