Double-heading of trains has certainly never been FR policy as a general rule, but there are a number of circumstances that can lead to its use on occasion: they include (i) Galas and suchlike celebrations: (ii) to reposition locomotives for operational purposes without additional line occupancy: (iii) to 'run-in' locomotives after a major overhaul: (iv) to rescue or assist a failed locomotive.
