[edit]Background
The Festiniog Railway has three carriages with open sides. These are added to service trains in good weather, to offer passengers an alternative to travelling in an enclosed carriage. The open coaches are usually placed imediately behind the locomotive. Usually known as the "Tourist Cars", these carriages were built in 1971 at Boston Lodge.
Semi-Open four compartment tourist coach built by FR Co. at Boston Lodge on a much older Hudson bogie wagon underframe (ex No. 70). When constructed some of the half height doors from Carriage 23 were fitted to this carriage and Carriage 38.
In this 1986 view of 37 the handbrake then fitted at the bottom end is visble. The livery is all-over maroon with black ends and large "3" transfers.
