Built in 1991 as part of the railway's "Increased Capacity" (INCA) programme, "The Carnforths" were 3 carriages built by Carnforth Railway Restoration & Engineering Services (hence the nickname), with running gear, electrical services, finishing and painting by FR Co. at Boston Lodge. Construction is of Aluminium bodies on steel under frames, with particular care taken to insulate the body from the underframe - thereby reducing the corrosion problems encountered with the Tin Carrs. They amongst the first FR carriages to be fitted with heating, and formed the backbone of the new “C Set”, which is still the main set used during the winter. They also featured twin vacuum braking and Push Pull apparatus from new.

These carriages consist of:

  • Carriage 112 3rd Class Saloon + 2 First Class Compartments
  • Carriage 113 3rd Class Saloon + 2 First Class Compartments - Since converted to 3rd Class Saloon + 1 3rd Class Compartment + Buffet Trolley Store (Transferred to WHR(C) operations)
  • Carriage 114 3rd Class Saloon + Buffet
