South African Railways NG15 class 2-8-2 built by Anglo-Franco-Belge (Builder's number 2684 of 1952). Commencing in 1999, work has gone on to strip, clean and assess the condition of the locomotive and its components, preparatory to its restoration and return to service.

Photgraphs of this locomotive can be found here on the Welsh Highland Railway Project web site.

Clive Briscoe, in an E-group posting 20350 10th January 2006, states on it's current state of restoration:

"We've got 134's rolling chassis into the Dinas ex 'clip shed' so it's out of the weather, many components HAVE been overhauled but many, many more need doing and there are some vital components missing which will have to be replaced - including a complete re-plumb. The wheelsets need to come out for reprofiling but it's believed that the bearings and hornguides may be ok. The motion appears to be ok but the valve expansion links and dies are a 'right rattling good fit'. The valve chests have been rebored but new valve heads will be needed. It's believed that the cylinders may not need reboring. The boiler needs minor patching, especially in the inner firebox and one or two rivets need renewing and of course, it needs retubing (All tubes were removed a couple of years ago). WHRS funds are available for all the small smoke tubes but not the superheater flue tubes.

The tender chassis has been repaired but the bogies still need some attention even though they were given the once over by Team Wylfa last winter - the wheelsets need reprofiling, bearings remetalled and horn guide slippers renewed. Then there's the new tank / bunker to make....

All-in-all, if someone would like to give us c.£65k we MIGHT be able to subcontract the work out and get it running again - we have hardly got the in-house resources available to keep 140's restoration going let alone all the other work just to keep the WHR operational.

Of course, if some more of you 'arm chair' members would like to come along and give us a hand (meant in the nicest possible way), we've lots of small jobs which even you might be able to tackle... Some refurbishment of smaller components might even qualify as 'homework' jobs..... Give me or Tony Williams a call sometime to discuss....

Then there's the debate about backward running / turntables or Y's (Don't start that thread again.....) (We believe there is a design for turntables available but 1. where would you put them and 2. who's going to pay for them....)"
